Why should Shopee and TikTok Shop sellers register a trademark?

A shop name gets you started. A recognised brand is what customers come back for.

General information for Malaysian businesses, not case-specific legal advice. Application outcomes depend on the facts and applicable rules.

The difference between a storefront and a brand

Opening a Shopee or TikTok Shop account does not itself grant registered trademark rights over your chosen brand name. A brand can become valuable through packaging, customer trust and repeat orders.

Platform rules and your rights

Marketplaces operate their own intellectual property and brand verification processes. A registered trademark may support an eligible brand claim or an infringement report, but it does not guarantee approval or automatic removal of listings.

When to apply

Consider a trademark search before ordering packaging in bulk, investing heavily in ads or expanding into new products. Identify the right owner and relevant classes; an initial search cannot guarantee registration.

A seller’s checklist

Prepare your brand name and logo, product list, ownership details and any relevant platform communications. Keep evidence of genuine brand use and authorised distributors.
